Emigrating today is becoming, for millions of people, a process that has such intense stress levels that they exceed human beings' ability to adapt. These people are at risk of suffering from Immigrant Syndrome with Multiple Chronic Stress or Ulysses Syndrome, referring to the Greek mythological hero. He suffered loneliness and numerous adversities and dangers, wandering for 20 years far from his land and his loved ones.
Bad times are when ordinary people have to behave like heroes to survive because those who emigrate today and run the same or more significant dangers than the Greek demigod Ulysses are nothing but simply human beings of flesh and blood.
Trail of Tears
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears recounts the banishment, in the mid-nineteenth century, of the Cherokees and Choctaws Indians expelled from their fertile lands in the plains of Tennessee. The Trail of Tears, in which more than 4,000 Native Americans perished due to the extreme conditions of cold, hunger, disease and suffering, is a migration that shows us the effects of colonialism suffered by the original peoples of America, like so many others peoples of the world.

Ulysses Syndrome Institute Migration and Mental Health main goals are:

  • Disseminate and promote the use of the concept of Ulysses Syndrome, Immigrant Syndrome with chronic and multiple stress or Ulysses suffering. Ulysses Syndrome is a picture of intense stress and mourning related to suffering relevant difficulties during migration such as loneliness, helplessness or lack of opportunities and that is expressed in the form of tension, nervousness, recurrent worries, sadness, difficulties sleeping, headaches and other stress-related somatic complaints.
  • To create a documentation centre about everything that is published about Ulysses Syndrome.
  • To offer an advisory service on tests and research techniques on the Syndrome, Ulysses Scale and Kayak Test.
  • To offer updated information on all developments and activities related to the Syndrome.
  • To offer regulated and general training on Ulysses Syndrome.
  • Working to humanise and dignify the figure of the immigrant is so often vilified. He also seeks to work to apply the Charter of Human Rights of the United Nations of 1948, which in article 13 establishes the right to emigrate. It also promotes the respect of minorities and investigates the relations between migration and decolonisation.
  • Ensure that the use of the Ulysses Syndrome respects the values that Dr Joseba Achotegui proposed when he coined the concept in 2002.

Ulysses Syndrome or emigrant syndrome with chronic and multiple stress is a picture of extreme migratory grief, not a mental disorder, that appears in immigrants who live in very adverse situations (loneliness, exclusion, fear and helplessness).
